I’m going to be sharing my top three essential oils for encouraging healthy normal hair growth!
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated extracts of various plants. An essential oil is "essential" in the sense that it contains the "essence of" the plant's fragrance
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary oil is effective in improving your hair thickness. It also aids in hair growth.Studies suggest that rosemary essential oil is as effective as minoxidil in improving hair growth (2).
Minoxidil is commonly prescribed to enhance hair growth. It was also found that rosemary oil had fewer side-effects as compared to minoxidil.
More revealing recent studies show that rosemary directly helps protect against hair loss.
This 2015 trial (link in description)
Compared Rosemary essential oil against minoxidil, commercially known as Rogaine.
Interestingly - both were used on human subjects with (male or female pattern baldness).
Results showed that rosemary essential oil was just as effective a minoxidil.
During the process, THERE WAS LESS the side effect of itchy scalp more successfully than minoxidil.
Two separate clinical reviews also highlight rosemary oil as effective in growing hair.
It was found that Rosemary Oil successfully improves circulation - healthy circulation means nutrients - get up to the scalp.
Most interestingly A 2011 study found that rosemary oil regrows hair in people suffering from Alopecia.
In the review, rosemary essential oil was actually described as a hair loss restorative.
How To Use:
- Mix a few drops of rosemary oil with coconut oil and apply to your scalp.
- Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse off completely with shampoo and conditioner.
- 2-3 times of application per week is recommended.
Peppermint Oil
This study has found that Peppermint Oil helps to improve hair growth without toxic signs
This study investigated the effect of peppermint oil on hair growth in mice.
The animals were randomized into 4 groups based on different topical applications:
Some of them had salt water applied to them,
Others had jojoba oil (JO),
The third group had minoxidil (MXD),
And the fourth group had peppermint oil applied to them. The study found that peppermint oil, when used on mice, increased the number of follicles, follicle depth, and overall hair growth.
There are a few ways you can use peppermint oil on your hair to try to prevent hair loss.
One is by direct scalp massage.
Again add a couple drops of oil to your favorite scalp massage oil. If you don’t have scalp massage oil, you can use a simple household oil like coconut, jojoba, or shea butter oil.
Massage the oil into your scalp. You may feel a tingling, minty sensation. Leave the treatment on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash your hair with shampoo. If the menthol sensation gets too intense for you, add other oils to balance the effect or wash your scalp with shampoo immediately.
You can also put peppermint oil straight into your shampoo and conditioner bottles. Make sure not to add too much. About five drops per ounce of shampoo or conditioner is recommended. Simply use your shampoo and conditioner with the peppermint essential oil as you usually would, and enjoy the benefits.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil may help with issues like pattern baldness or alopecia.
This 2016 study found that when lavender oil applied to mice made them grow more hair. Their hair also grew thicker and faster than normal.
This benefit is way more effective when the oil can work itself into the skin.
As a result lavender oil may help with issues like pattern baldness or alopecia.
Lavender Oil has also done really well in comparison to minoxidil.
Minoxidil or Rogaine is a chemical product - it's a vasodilator, so it helps to enlarge your veins that
are heading up towards your scalp making sure that there's lots of nutrients that
get there so that your scalp is nourished and your hair is healthy.
More research is needed as human studies are needed to prove this, though people can safely massage Lavender oil into their scalps and hair.
Lavender Oil may also help to heal the skin and kills bacteria.
Lavender is an antimicrobial
Which means it helps to prevent bacteria and fungi from developing.
When massaged into your scalp or hair this may prevent common issues such as dandruff and an itchy scalp.
This study found that Lavender Oil is able to generate faster hair growth in mice.
I mix several drops of lavender oil into 3 tablespoons of a carrier oil like olive oil or melted coconut oil and apply it directly to your scalp.
Leave it in for about an hour before washing it out and shampoo as you normally would and youcan do this several times per week.
I also share in one of our previous videos About how to create your own DHT blocking hair oils
You can mix Lavender Oil with other oils too - just to increase the various benefits of the various oils working together.
